A Day at the Zoo

I spent a day at the Wellington Zoo.

There was a really wide range of animals around the zoo. I saw larger animals such as giraffes, lions, tigers, and snow leopards, along with sun bears and a few red pandas. There were also birds like the native kea, penguins, and even ostriches. The primate section had a lot going on, with chimpanzees, gibbons, tamarins, spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and two types of lemurs, ring-tailed and black-and-white ruffed. There were also smaller animals, such as meerkats, capybaras, and otters. They also had a variety of reptiles, including a blue-tongued skink, tuatara, and Wellington green gecko.

One of the first areas you walk through is the “petting zoo” section, which has more farm-type animals like chickens, sheep, and kunekune pigs. It was a nice introduction to the bigger exhibits. They also had a section called “Neighbors,” which focused on animals from Australia. That included kangaroos, wallabies, a Tasmanian devil, and dingoes, which was really cool to see all in one place.

One of the most interesting parts of the zoo was a building called “The Nest,” which is their animal hospital and vet clinic. You can actually see into different rooms like surgery, wildlife rescue, rehab, and regular exam spaces. It was interesting to see that side of the zoo and how they take care of the animals behind the scenes.

Overall, it was a really fun and easy day activity in Wellington and a good way to spend a few hours exploring something different in the city.
